Miami Dolphins Sign Veteran Free Agent QB Jacoby Brissett:
The former Indianapolis Colts QB signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins on the second day of NFL free agency. The contract carries $5 million in guaranteed salary, with a maximum of $7.5 million through incentives.
It is a bit of a homecoming for Jacoby Brissett as he grew up in West Palm Beach, FL which lies about an hour north of Miami (depending on traffic of course). Brissett attended William T. Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens before going on to the University of Florida and eventually North Carolina State University. Brissett is expected to come to Miami in a backup QB/Mentorship role with the Dolphins, as Miami looks to continue to build around 2020 5th overall pick Tua Tagovailoa. The role was previously held by long-time Journeyman QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, who signed a one-year deal with the Washington Football Team on Monday afternoon.
Brissett’s most productive season came recently in the 2019 season, as the Indy QB started 15 games leading the Colts to a 7–8 record while throwing for just under 3,000 yards, 18 Touchdowns, and 6 Interceptions. Brissett is a very serviceable backup QB, and will fill in nicely for Brian Flores should he ever need him to (though of course we’re hoping Tua stays healthy). After it was learned that Fitzpatrick would not be returning to Miami they needed to fill the backup role, and signed arguably the best backup caliber free agent QB available. Brissett will look to bring his experience, and his knowledge of the position to assist Tua in his growing process.
With the addition of Brissett, Miami’s current cap space is in the neighborhood of $25–28 million, with a significant portion of it tied up in paying the 2021 draft class & practice squad players. Miami will be looking to add a free agent WR, a couple more LBs, and potentially a Center. Don’t expect any more flashy signings out of General Manager Chris Grier, but never count out Dolphins owner Stephen Ross opening the checkbook to make Miami’s roster more competitive.
